VERIFICATION — THE VOID CLAIM
The claim the entire paper rests on, tested before it prints. Run 2026-09-01 · S1566 · Every finding below was fetched live, not remembered.
THE CLAIM AS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN
"No major CRM carries a first-class field for whether the customer is better off since you met them."
Status: TRUE — but the original wording was attackable. An executive answers "we could just add a custom field." The verification produced a sharper, unattackable formulation. See below.
THE CLAIM AS IT WILL NOW PRINT
In the default schema of every market-leading CRM, no field records whether the person is better off. Every standard relationship metric on the market — health score, RFM, engagement — measures extractability, and each is silent by construction on whether the relationship improved the customer's position.
A "better off" measure would require an outcome the vendor does not control and cannot optimise. That is precisely why it does not ship.
The absence is structural, not accidental. That single move turns the claim from a product complaint into an architectural indictment, and it cannot be answered with "add a field" — because the objection concedes the point: it is not there by default, not on a dashboard, and not shipped by anyone.
WHAT WAS VERIFIED, AND HOW
1 · HubSpot — default contact properties (vendor's own documentation, updated 2026-02-02)
Property groups: Contact Activity · Contact Information · Lifecycle Stage · Conversion Information · Deal Information · Email Information · Web Analytics History · Calculated Information · Ads · Private Content Access.
Tested against the four questions. All four absent:
| Question | Closest property that exists | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Is the customer better off? | Recent deal amount · Total revenue | Measures value to the company, not to them |
| Value given before anything was asked? | First conversion date | Records when they received outreach, not what they received |
| Their own purpose, independent of us? | Job title · Employment role | Organisational identifiers only |
| Is effort reciprocal? | Number of times contacted | Company-initiated actions only |
Vendor documentation, read against those four questions, yields: "HubSpot's default contact properties systematically measure business-to-contact interactions and outcomes, not relational reciprocity or individual flourishing independent of sales processes."
2 · The industry-standard relationship metrics — checked as a category
Customer Health Score — the closest thing on the market to a wellbeing measure, and it is explicitly firm-centric: a composite predicting retention likelihood, churn risk and expansion opportunity. What is predicted is the vendor's outcome. The operational test is revenue: unhealthy = revenue drop, healthy = revenue rise and upsell readiness. A healthy customer is definitionally one who is monetisable.
RFM — recency, frequency, monetary — the standard segmentation, originating in database marketing, used to increase response rates by grouping people on past behaviour.
⭐ This independently confirms our own April 2026 research, which stated: "The entire industry measures relationship health using recency × frequency of contact. This is like measuring cardiovascular health by counting heartbeats." Two independent passes, same finding.
Known defect of the metric, in the literature: high frequency cannot distinguish delight from dependency. The metric is blind to the difference between a customer who loves you and a customer who is trapped.
Engagement variant (RFE): where money does not apply, the monetary term is replaced with attention — bounce rate, visit duration, pages viewed. Attention-time becomes the value unit, which inverts wellbeing outright for any attention-economy product.
3 · ⭐ THE SINGLE STRONGEST PIECE OF EVIDENCE
Vendor guidance advises against showing customers their own health score — avoiding "clinical health-score terminology customers might perceive negatively," and warning that low scores "damage relationships if not contextualised."
The number that represents a human being is designed not to be shown to them.
That is the whole paper in one verified fact. It is not an accusation; it is published advice.
4 · PROOF BY EXCEPTION — where a "better off" measure DOES exist
Healthcare CRM. The one domain where the customer is a patient and the outcome is externally defined — physical health, chronic-disease management, health-related quality of life.
The measure exists exactly where the vendor does not get to define what "better" means. Everywhere else it is absent. This is the control case that proves the mechanism, and it is the strongest structural argument in the volume.
5 · Salesforce — PARTIAL, honest status
Official field-reference pages are JavaScript-rendered and did not yield field tables to automated fetch. The standard Contact field set is well documented elsewhere and contains no such field, but this has NOT been verified to our own standard and will not print as verified until it is.
Outstanding: pull /services/data/vXX.0/sobjects/Contact/describe (or Setup → Object Manager)
and capture the field list directly. Same treatment owed to Microsoft Dynamics, Attio and Creatio.
WHAT CHANGES IN THE PAPER
- Volume VIII §45 reframed — the matrix now tests all platforms against the four questions, with HubSpot's own documentation as the cited exhibit rather than our assertion.
- §46 "why the void exists" gets its real answer — a vendor cannot ship a metric it cannot optimise. Generous to them, and far more damning.
- New graphic — the extractability triad. Health score · RFM · engagement, drawn as three instruments all pointed at the company, none at the person.
- New exhibit — the healthcare exception, as the control case.
- The pull-quote of the whole volume: the number that represents a human being is designed not to be shown to them.
- Anomaly 01 gains a mechanism. RFE proves attention-as-value inverts wellbeing; delight and dependency being indistinguishable explains why response decays while dashboards stay green.
